Today's community newspapers provide a vibrant and relevant product that is eagerly anticipated each week by their readers. Their reporters cover the local stories and events that matter most to their devoted readership. By employing highly skilled people trained on the latest computer-assisted layout and design programs, they present that product in a professional and attractive manner.

The Community Media Canada (CMC) membership is comprised of member publications of the regional associations that are in federation with the Canadian Community Newspapers Association, and the members of Les Hebdos du Quebec.

The criteria for membership may vary slightly with each regional community newspaper association, however all must follow some important basic standards:

  • Ad-to-Editorial Ratios - Advertising must not exceed 70% in any one issue.
  • Editorial Content - The majority of associations specify that local editorial staff or correspondents must produce at least 50% the content of member newspaper, and that a least 50% of the content is local and relevant to the newspaper's circulation area.
  • Publishing Frequency - Depending on the association, member newspapers may publish from one to five times weekly and distribute a minimum of 48 times per year. However, some publications are are biweekly, and some are once a month.
